Spring cleaning tips to keep your home running smoothly
Published: 24th March 2025
When spring arrives, there are a few things that we all do. The first is to talk about how nice the weather is. The second is to get into spring cleaning mode. But have you thought about adding your central heating system to your cleaning routine? Or your hard-working (but often neglected!) electrics, plumbing and drains? Here are some tips to get you started.
Clean around the boiler
Use a duster or a vacuum cleaner to get rid of any dust (or cobwebs!) around the boiler and surrounding pipes. And clear items from around your boiler too – this’ll help for better airflow. Then head outside to check your condensate pipe is free from any blockages around the base.
Check your boiler pressure
If your boiler’s pressure is too low, it can affect performance. Not sure how to get started? Check out our guide here. If you do need to re-pressurise your boiler, we’ve got a step-by-step guide to help.
Inspect your radiator valves
Make sure they turn easily so water can flow properly. If they’re too stiff, your radiators won’t heat as efficiently. While you're checking the valves, why not lower the setting as you prepare for the warmer weather?
Bleed your radiators
Air trapped in radiators stops them from heating up properly. Bleeding them helps with this and is something that should be done regularly. It’s easy when you know how – check out our step-by-step guide for instructions.
Test your thermostat
You want to make sure your thermostat isn’t wasting energy (and costing you more). Adjust the temperature and make sure it’s all in working order and you’re not too hot or cold.
Book a boiler service
Get a qualified engineer to check your boiler and heating system to make sure it’s running efficiently. If you’re a HomeCare customer, you get a boiler service included with your cover. We’ll let you know when it’s due. And even if you’re not with us, you can book in a boiler service from just £93.
Give your system a Powerflush
Over time, sludge and debris can collect in your heating system. This can affect its performance and efficiency. Get a Powerflush from one of our experts to make sure your system’s clean, clear and keeping you cosy. Look for cold spots on your radiators and listen out for strange sounds from your boiler – they could be signs you need a Powerflush.
Look and listen to your boiler
You’re probably familiar with some of the sounds your boiler makes when you turn it on to heat your home or boost the hot water. But if you hear any strange gurgling or bubbling sounds or see any warning lights or messages, it’s time to bring in the experts. Try to record them on your phone when you notice them, it’ll help your engineer diagnose the problem.
