Moving home with British Gas

Moving can take it out of you. So while you're busy with the boxes, we'll take care of your energy. Whether you're bringing us with you, or we already supply your new place, we'll make it simple.

Here's how it works:

  1. Let us know your address and moving dates
  2. Make a note of your meter readings on moving day
  3. Leave the rest to us

Frequently asked questions

What happens with my final bill?

We'll send your final bill once you've moved out and we've closed your account. And if you send us a meter reading just before you leave, we can make sure your bill is accurate. If you don't get the chance, not a problem. We'll estimate your last reading for you.

What if British Gas supply my new home, but I want to switch to another supplier?

Of course we'd love you to stay. But if you do want to switch, it's still important we get you set up with an account for now. From move-in day until you switch, you'll need to pay for the energy you use with us. And if you have a prepayment meter, you'll first need an account before you can top up.

Can I have a smart meter installed in my new home?

Yes, and better yet we fit smart meters for free. After we've set you up with an account, just let us know the best time to come by.

What if I have no gas/electricity in my new home?

Our first thought is your new home probably has a prepayment meter (or two) that's run out of credit. So we'll just need to get you topped up and turned back on. For everything you need to know about moving into somewhere with a prepayment meter, give this page a read.

Can I take HomeCare with me to my new home?

Yes, just let us know that you're moving and whether you want to keep the same level of boiler cover, or change it.

What should I do with my Hive Active Heating when I move?

Some of your Hive Active Heating kit - the receiver, thermostat and signal booster - are essential to the central heating in your home. So please leave them for the people moving in after you. They won't have any heating otherwise. But you can take your Hive hub and any other Hive products you have with you, and put them back to work in your new home.
