Scottish Apprenticeships Week - Case Study - David Crawford

He started the two-year programme in July last year and will qualify in 2015.

He is one of 60 plus apprentices currently enrolled on an apprenticeship at the Academy.

David explained: “After completing my Highers at high school, I wasn’t really sure what route to take. Having looked into various career paths, the idea of an apprenticeship where I could learn new practical skills really appealed to me.”

After working in a few different jobs, David applied to Scottish Gas in 2013 and, after successfully completing the selection process, he secured a place on the central heating installation apprenticeship programme. He continued: “Being in the academy has not only taught me a lot of engineering theory and given me hands-on experience, but working with my fellow apprentices has also helped me to develop my interpersonal skills.

“No two jobs days are ever the same and there are always new challenges, and opportunities to enhance your skills as an engineer. I recently went to a customer’s home to fill and air their radiators, where I found myself confronted with a pet snake in the back bedroom.”

David says he has particularly benefited from the opportunity to be hands-on in the field. He said: “Because it’s a field-based job, you are able to travel to new areas and meet new people on a daily basis. We have to work in a close knit team to get the job done and the engineers in my area are really helpful.”

David concluded: “My apprenticeship has really given me the drive and determination to succeed as an engineer. “I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone. The level of training and equipment provided has been fantastic, and I’ve been supported throughout the process. Once I complete my apprenticeship next year I want lots of experience under my belt so I can progress quickly through the programme, hopefully taking on more responsibility.”

Almost 50 apprentices are currently in training across Scottish Gas -- we’re proud to invest millions of pounds each year in developing skills for our people and the future economic success of the economy.

As part of Scottish Apprenticeships Week, Scottish Gas is showcasing apprenticeship opportunities to the public at its award-winning Academy in Hamilton. The Academy in Hamilton is one of six award-winning facilities which the business uses to train apprentices and up-skill existing engineers on new technologies and appliances.

In 2013, the company invested £13m in its six UK training academies and apprentices. For further information on apprenticeships, visit www.britishgasjobs.co.uk or follow @britishgasjobs on Twitter.
