Pupils from two Scottish schools have today (Friday 12th June) been declared winners of Scottish Gas’ Generation Green competition, winning energy makeovers worth up to a combined £150,000 for their schools.

Children from Stoneyburn Primary School and Holyrood Secondary School danced their way to success in the action-packed final at INTU Braehead Shopping Centre in Glasgow.

Holyrood Secondary School have won an energy makeover worth up to £100,000 after facing King’s Park Secondary in the secondary school heat, while Stoneyburn Primary School were awarded an energy makeover worth up to £50,000 after competing against Kirk O’Shotts Primary School.

The runners up have each received energy-saving technology worth up to £25,000 for their school.

The schools were declared winners of the Scottish competition region by Heart Scotland Drivetime DJ, Paul Harper, and Leigh Currie from Scottish Gas, thanks to their energy-inspired dance routines.

They were awarded the highest number of points for their performances and the energy created when they danced on a special power-generating dance mat called Pavegen.

Energy makeover
The schools were invited to the final after pupils submitted designs for an energy-saving school of the future.

Their creative ideas were shortlisted from a number from Scotland.

Both schools will be transformed with the latest energy-saving technology, such as solar panels, LED lighting and new energy-efficient boilers. The makeovers could save each school up to £7,000 a year on their fuel bills.

Paul Harper said: “I was blown away by the amazing performances by the schools. The kids had fantastic routines and I was really impressed with how they combined energy inspired moves into their dances in such creative, energetic and fun ways.”

Ryan Taylor, teacher at Holyrood Secondary School said: "We’re thrilled to have been named the winner of Scottish Gas’ Generation Green competition.

The children worked really hard on their designs for an eco-school of the future and the dance routine, and it’s great their efforts paid off in such a spectacular way.

The makeover will transform our school, helping us to save energy every day and will inspire our pupils now and in the future about being green."

Rohan Bole aged 16 from Holyrood said: ”I’ve had so much fun at the Generation Green dance competition today. Myself and a few of the girls in the group are Irish dancers, and some are Bollywood dancers, so we thought we would merge the two to create an impressive routine for the judges.

We spent 3 hours rehearsing this morning, so I’m really happy our efforts have paid off and we’ve won the makeover for Holyrood!”

Leigh Currie of Scottish Gas added: “We’re delighted for both schools after their incredible performance.

“The pupils captured the spirit of Generation Green with their creative dance routines and imaginative ideas for an eco-school, and are now budding energy innovators for the future.”

GENERATION GREEN
The competition is part of Scottish Gas’ Generation Green schools programme, which inspires thousands of children and teachers to think about energy and to reduce energy use within schools and the wider community.
