Mims Davies MP visits British Gas’s first dementia-friendly office

  • Local MP meets Dementia Friends pioneers
  •  Over 8,000 British Gas employees have become Dementia Friends

Eastleigh MP Mims Davies will today meet the 100-strong team at British Gas’ office in the constituency who have all become Dementia Friends over the past year.  The British Gas site at Chandler’s Ford is dedicated to resolving customer complaints dealing with hundreds of calls every week.

British Gas made the commitment to become a fully dementia-friendly organisation in January 2016.  As well as encouraging employees to become Dementia Friends so they can better serve customers with dementia, the company supports employees with dementia or with caring responsibilities.  British Gas is improving its systems for customers with dementia and working with community groups like the local Chandlers Ford Dementia Action Alliance, which has held meetings at the site.

In 2016, British Gas was invited by the Prime Minister’s Dementia Challenge Group to be one of 10 pathfinder organisations modelling what is meant by a fully dementia-friendly organisation. The company is now leading a group which is writing advice on being dementia friendly for other businesses involved in energy, water and telecoms, from big corporations to local traders.

Keira Bradford from British Gas said: “We are so pleased that the whole team are now Dementia Friends. We can confidently show a better understanding of what we need to do to support our customers living with dementia.”

Mims Davies MP said: “I had a great welcome from Annabel and Keira today. The Dementia Friends session was really informative and gave me a clearer appreciation of what I can do to help people right across Eastleigh. I am delighted to have finally become a Dementia Friend and I want to thank British Gas for all they are doing to help make our communities safer.”

Steve Crabb, Director responsible for Consumer Vulnerability at British Gas, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Mims Davies MP to Chandler’s Ford. We are incredibly proud that all of our people on this site have made the commitment to becoming a Dementia Friend.  It’s a testament to the care and compassion that our people have for our customers.

"Helping customers with dementia is a priority for British Gas.

"We estimate that at least 100,000 of our customers live alone, in their own homes, with the condition. Many of our customers live with partners who also have dementia or other serious health conditions. We’ve been working closely with organisations like the Alzheimer’s Society and the Dementia Action Alliance so we can meet the needs of our customers.”
