We’ve had a really busy 2018, as have our customers. We support businesses from sole traders all the way through to large industrial corporate organisations. For our customers, having reliable business energy is fundamental to the day-to-day running of their business.
Now that we’re so close to ringing in the New Year, we wanted to give you a roundup of what British Gas business has been up to in 2018.
Helping our customers
We’ve made it easier for our customers to contact us; you can now chat to us from our website, saving you time and effort. We’ve had some great feedback about this from our customers so far:

We’re also constantly improving your Online Account, and our customers can self-serve whenever and wherever you want, whether that be submitting a meter read, going paper-free or setting up alerts about changes to your account, saving you from contacting us.
Case study: How we’ve helped NHS Property Services this year
NHS Property Services procures non-half-hourly electricity from British Gas for over 1,300 NHS estates, including GP surgeries, health centres and offices, comprising 10% of NHS total estate.
NHS England has identified a potential “funding gap” in recent years. It’s clear that energy efficiency measures could play a big role in revitalising the NHS.
A recent report by Centrica highlighted the potential for adopting smart energy strategies. The report found that, if all major NHS trusts put in place distributed energy solutions – such as on-site generation and battery storage – the NHS could save at least £260 million each year (the report excludes smaller sites).

Changes in the Energy industry
The Energy industry is a fast-moving one, and 2018 has seen lots of changes that have affected us and our customers. Some of these changes are:
Push towards a greener future
We received the Carbon Trust certification for our Renewable Electricity for Business product for larger business customers (spending over £100,000 per year on energy)
Centrica, our parent company, is supporting the world’s largest commercial electric vehicle (EV) project to help develop practical ways of overcoming up-front costs that are currently holding back some of the UK’s biggest commercial vehicle operators to switch to EVs.
Support for businesses in London
We support the London Mayor Cleaner Heat cashback scheme in which the UK Government pledges to give cashback to eligible businesses in the London area who replace their inefficient boiler with a more efficient one.
Progress toward a smarter, more flexible energy market
Research by PwC has found that businesses are increasingly interested in smart technology and in fact more than a third of industrial firms and one in five commercial organisations are planning to invest over £1m on smart energy technology in the next five years. British Gas business offers smarter working tips, smart meters and Hive connected products to support your business.
Volunteering For Charity
British Gas Business is dedicated to helping our local communities and charities. This year, volunteers logged more than 2500 hours painting and gardening at hospitals and local schools, spending time with care home residents, preparing lunch for under-privileged children during the school holidays at community centres, and much more.
We also made use of our call centre capabilities to support Children in Need in November, and 65 volunteers from our Leicester office stayed in the evening to take donations over the phone. Our volunteers took 766 calls totalling £32,932 in donations. We also received feedback from BT who were impressed with our call statistics; we answered 99.5% of calls and of these, 94.4% callers donated.
We’re so proud of the effort our colleagues put in to volunteer and support these worthwhile causes, whether local or national, and we’re looking forward to helping even more people and communities in 2019.
