Energy costs can be a significant part of your business’s underlying costs, but there are ways to help keep your carbon footprint down, and your bank balance up. For a little inspiration, we’ve taken a look at five well-known businesses that have made incredible savings to shed some light on how they did it.
Marks and Spencer
M&S have long been at the forefront of the green revolution in retail with their environmental plan which they have named Plan A. Currently, they are tackling their business electricity prices and their carbon footprint by taking their energy source in house. Where possible, all new build M&S sites will generate 20% of their energy on-site. On top of this they’ve committed to reducing the amount of energy used in-store by 25% per square foot.
Part of the successful soft drinks company’s mission statement is to leave the planet a little bit better than they left it, and they say they ask themselves the simple question “How can we use less?” They work with every part of their supply chain to use less electricity wherever possible, and they only use electricity from renewable sources at their headquarters, Fruit Towers.
Matalan are managing their business electricity consumption using wireless technology. They use a Building Energy Management System that controls lighting, heating and cooling in their 155 stores. The system has already saved them an impressive £760,000 in energy bills. They plan to roll out the technology in 206 out of 216 stores, and hope to save £1.7 million in the process.
The Co-operative is making huge savings with a very simple solution: shutting fridge doors. Open-fronted chillers waste huge amounts of energy, and the company, which has already added doors to fridges in 100 stores, is saving £50 million a year in energy bills and benefitting the environment at the same time.
The DIY store has concentrated its efforts to reduce the amount of electricity it uses on lighting and heating in its stores. It has installed energy-efficient lamps and dimming controls, disconnected spotlights and reduced the lighting level set points of its internal lighting. It has also reduced the temperature of thermostats from 20°C to 17°C in the day and 16°C to 15°C at night. Simple, but very effective.
