Thousands of businesses benefit from smart meter technology

Business smart meter - British Gas Business

As you may know, the UK government has given all energy suppliers the responsibility to install smart meter technology in all businesses by 2019. The official roll out begins next year, but because we want our customers to benefit as soon as possible, we’ve already carried out over 400,000 installations in businesses to date.

Smart meters are the next generation of meter technology and are already changing the way many businesses manage their energy. They work by transmitting meter readings directly to us regularly via a SIM card in the meter, just like a mobile phone. Meter readings are collected automatically using a secure encrypted service. It means less time sending manual meter readings and more accurate bills, so customers only pay for what they use and can budget more easily.

Smart meter readings can also be used to help customers monitor, manage and reduce their energy use. Business Energy Insightâ„¢, our online service, uses smart meter data to create easy to understand charts and graphs that show energy consumption patterns. Customers can then identify trends and act upon them to make savings.

Smart technology is therefore becoming an invaluable tool to help businesses achieve their energy efficiency goals.
