Where does Renewable Gas come from?

Renewable gas is created through a process called anaerobic digestion. Feedstocks such as arable crops and waste - like food waste, animal manure, plant waste and sewage - are processed in an anaerobic digestor. This turns it into digestate and biogas.

Digestate is used as a fertiliser, soil improver, or for livestock bedding. The biogas is purified and turned into biomethane. This has exactly the same specifications as fossil natural gas, so it can be injected into the gas grid, and used as part of the normal gas supply.

How does Renewable Gas get to my business?

When Renewable Gas is produced, it’s fed into the gas grid and mixed with gas from non-renewable sources. This means we can’t send solely renewable gas directly to your business.

Instead, for 100% of the gas you use, we guarantee that the same amount of gas from renewable sources will be fed into the gas grid. This is backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) [3].

What are RGGOs?

RGGOs are official documents that are issued by the Green Gas Certification Scheme, an independent body that tracks the production and sale of Renewable Gas.

UK biomethane plant – Our Commitment to sustainability

Our commitment to sustainability

As part of Centrica Plc, we’ve recently signed our first UK biomethane gas purchase agreement with Yorkshire Water and SGN Commercial Services. This is helping to accelerate biomethane production across Europe, and helping businesses deliver on their green procurement strategies and reduce emissions.

[3] 100% Renewable Gas (RGGO): Every unit of gas British Gas supply you during your contract will be matched to gas from a renewable energy source and British Gas will hold the necessary number of Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) as evidence of this supply. We will use reasonable endeavours to purchase enough Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) for the gas you use on this tariff. However, failure to do so will not constitute a breach of contract by us or give rise to you having the right to terminate the supply contract. In the event something changes, and we can no longer guarantee a renewable supply we’ll write and let you know.
