Step 1: Working out what you need

We’ll make sure you get a new meter or supply that meets your energy needs.

Step 2: Connecting

We'll work with our service provider to obtain a quote and then lay pipeline and/or connect cables. With gas, this process can take up to four weeks.

With electricity, the Distribution Network Owner (DNO) will tell you how long installation will take – this may be up to 12 weeks. When installation is complete you'll be given a Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN). We'll need this before we can install your new electricity meter.

Step 3: Your new contract

We’ll help you match the energy needs of your business to the right contract. This process should take one-to-two working days.

Step 4: New meter installation

If a new commercial gas and/or electricity meter is needed, we'll arrange this with one of our approved service providers. This process takes 10-to-15 working days.

Step 5: Completion

We'll call you on completion to make sure you're happy with the work and to put you in touch with the account manager for your contract. The whole process should have taken five-to-six weeks, although in the case of electricity this will depend on the DNO.

FAQs on business gas and electricity installation

Can new gas pipelines and electricity cables serve more than one supply point?
A: Yes, they can be connected to more than one supply point.
Can I change the position of my existing gas supply?
A: Yes, if you're one of our customers we can change the position of your existing gas supply. We'll need you to tell us your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), which you can find on your gas bill.
What information will I need to arrange a new business gas meter?
A: We'll need you to tell us your MPRN and the pressure of the service installed. You can find the pressure of the service on a yellow sticker on the end of the supply pipe, or on your original quotation.
What information will I need to arrange a new business electricity meter?
A: We'll need you to tell us your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN). The company that lays your new cable can tell you this number.
Can I get a larger gas supply or meter?
A: Yes, if you're one of our customers we can ask for an increase in load or pressure. We’ll need your site plan, which must show where the meter is inside the building and also where the building is in relation to other properties and roads.
Can you alter my electricity supply?
A: Yes, if you're one of our customers we can increase or change any existing installation.

[1] Please note that the timeframes are estimates for guidance only and are based on low pressure infrastructures and standard metering. Medium pressure and above should expect completion times of five to 10 weeks. Meters with larger requirements can take up to 20 working days to install.
